If you’re planning any vacation time for the May 21 weekend, you might want to cancel your plans because there are some people out there buzzing about the end of the world on May 21,2011!

If the world doesn’t end as predicted in only 20 days from this writing, how are these people going to justify their prediction?

People have been predicting the eminent end of the world since 30 AD and we’re still here! Saint Clement predicted that the world would end at any time way back in 90 AD! Between 1005-1006 a famine throughout Europe was considered a sure sign that the end was very near.

There have been many predictions dating back to the 1800′s about the end of the world or the Second Coming and now, May 21,2011 is supposed to be the final day for all of us earthlings.

False prophecy?

Most likely.  But…

Could it happen?

Sure. All things are possible. Earth is one big object floating in the middle of space and subject to being hit by any other big thing that penetrates its atmosphere with enough size, speed and impact. Scary things like large comets and meteors could conceivably wipe everything out.

Or toasty things like gigantic solar flares.

It’s also possible that Earth’s tectonic plates might decide to stretch their legs after tens of thousands of years of  earthquakes and tremors. There could be a whole lot o’ shaking going on or huge cracks that can swallow up things and people.

Revelations 16:18 does mention a gigantic earthquake…

18And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

As for the Second Coming, well, most Christians believe that it will happen and it’s in the scriptures.  I believe in it based on faith and information I have gathered from reading scriptures and prophecies.

When it comes to the end of the world, I think that seeing and believing are two different experiences. It’s just one of those things that you can only grasp when and if it happens in your lifetime.

Until then, all you can do is prepare for it if you believe or be caught unprepared if you don’t.

If you’re an atheist or think that the Bible and other scriptures were all made up or fictional then you will definitely have to see it to believe it and you’re unlikely to appreciate any of this “end of the world” stuff.

Some people believe in a Rapture, an event that will happen very suddenly and take  a number of people up into Heaven.  If that happens, who is going to take care of all the pets the faithful will leave behind?

No worries. Pet insurance and care has been made available by a group of atheists who know that they won’t be caught up in the cloud:

Now, with all the ugly wars, evil things going on in our world and the somewhat deplorable state of humankind, it wouldn’t surprise me if 2011 or 2012 end up becoming the doom and gloom some people like to dwell on.

Humankind has been around for a long time and all good and bad things eventually come come to and end.  Without divine revelation it’s really hard to predict what generation will actually witness the end of days.

Could it be ours?
